Meet another Career Fitness graduate - Tim Diegan

Monday, May 10th, 2010

I first met Tim when I took the business module of his Certificate IV in Fitness course. Since then Tim has been a big fan of Career Fitness, and has completed the nutrition for exercise & sports performance, nutrition for fat loss, as well as a number of the courses provided in the Career Fitness Membership. Tim chose a career in the Fitness Industry because he has been involved in sports all his life and has been training in the gym since he was 17 years old. “I love the fact you can better yourself through training in the gym and in my opinion the fitness lifestyle is truly the only way to live”

Tim originally started in Web Design and was training at a gym just as a hobby, “but the more I got into it the more I wanted to help others change their bodies and increase performance in everything they do. As we all know it’s proven that regular training, combining all facets of resistance training, cardio and diet, improve health & wellbeing, mental focus and happiness, which transfers to everything you do in life. This career is one that you can make such a difference in people’s lives. It’s very rewarding”.

Tim is a well credentialed trainer having completed both the Certificate 3 & 4 in Fitness, Level 1 Strength & Conditioning Coach, Certificate in Physique Conditioning and Pre-Contest Bodybuilding and Thump Boxing Level 2. Tim’s commitment to lifelong learning is obvious, “I will be completing my Level 2 Strength & Conditioning Coach course this year and also hope to do an internship with Tony Boutagy”. “Through gaining these qualifications I have built a successful Personal Training business within Bayfit Leisure Centre called Bodyseek Personal Training www.bodyseek.com.au At Present I have 2 casual staff members and am about to hire a 3rd. I have also worked as a strength & conditioning consultant to a State Level Baseball Club, trained clients for body sculpting/bodybuilding competitions (natural of course!) and since October last year have also held the role of Health-Club Coordinator at Bayfit Leisure Centre.

Tim has 3 areas of special area of interest with regards to training:

1. Fat loss - “I love taking clients through 12 week transformation challenges. One of my clients was published in the January issue of Women’s Health & Fitness. I am planning the inaugural Bodyseek 12 week challenge. I believe that through using the latest techniques in weight-training/interval cardio/nutrition that I can completely transform most people’s bodies in 12 weeks. I have had clients continue to train with me since I first started my business, and over their journey lose up to 30 kgs. Having a highly overweight population, this is obviously the bread and butter income for most personal trainers. I read a lot from Alwyn Cosgrove, Chad Waterbury, Charles Poliquin & Len Kravitz on this subject and would recommend their methods for any other PTs out there that want to get clients maintainable results in minimal time.

2. Bodybuilding - “I’m addicted to the Iron game myself, and admire the discipline, dedication and sacrifice people make at a natural level to compete”.

In terms of future goals Tim would like to “expand my business and ensure that between my staff and I, we do more than 100 sessions per week. I’m also looking at expanding my website to be more interactive for members, with all their data held in their own space, similar to bodybuilding.com’s “bodyspace”. Mid to late this year I also want to work side by side with my business coach in delivering corporate training workshops. Also, as I get to work more on my business and less in it, I would also like to become a lecturer for students doing Certificate 3 & 4. I’ll be in this industry for a very long time so am also looking at furthering my studies at University someday. I would love down the track to either have my own studio, or just keep Bodyseek growing within the Bayfit setup.

3. Sports-specific Strength & Conditioning: Learning stuff like energy system training and Westside Barbell training protocols is awesome. If time allowed and the price was right, I’d love to be a part-time weights coach at a Football or Soccer Club.

Away from training clients Tim loves soccer and proudly support South Melbourne FC. ”Bodybuilding is my next favourite sport and I attend most bodybuilding competitions throughout the year”. He loves training, eating and reading. “My closest group of friends are all either members of a gym or work in the fitness industry themselves, as I really enjoy being around like-minded people”.

Exercising for Two

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

On Saturday 20th February over 30 Career Fitness members spent several hours with one of Australia’s leading experts in the area of exercise and pregnancy Lisa Westlake learning how to incorporates a range of exercise options to maximize health before & after pregnancy .

Lisa spent time with the group discussing possible pregnancy related conditions and identify appropriate exercise modifications, knowing when, and for whom, exercise is contraindicated, recognising when to refer for further assessment, understanding important dos and don’ts of pre and post natal exercise and developing a range of exercises for general fitness as well as pregnancy specifics such as pelvic floor, core, and posture.

The workshop was well received by all and the following feedback summarises the group’s response well. “I really enjoyed the workshop.  People being pregnant and having babies are not really my thing, but I thought I thought I should attend anyway in case I have clients that are pregnant in the future.  Lisa was an excellent presenter and made the subject matter really interesting. She ran over time and gave us the option to leave, but obviously everybody felt the same as me as everyone stayed!

The next Career Ftiness event will be Kettlebell Training and members will be taken through their paces by an Australian Kettlebell certified Trainer held at Iron Edge.
