Certificate III in Fitness - Gym Instructor
Overview
This is the foundation stone upon which all other fitness qualifications are built. It can be studied full time or part time to suit your lifestyle.
It is the minimum qualification necessary for employment as a fitness instructor, and is the pre-requisite for the Personal Trainer course.
Here’s what’s covered in our Certificate III in Fitness Course:
- Anatomy – discover the basic structure and function of the human body and how this related to exercise.
- Exercise Physiology – understand how energy systems work and the impact this has on exercise choices.
- Nutrition – learn the truth about how what we eat impacts on our health and body composition changes related to losing weight or increasing muscle size.
- Fitness Evaluation – learn how to do a health screen, measure body composition, and test aerobic fitness. Going through this process allows you to gain the information required for developing safe and effective exercise programs. Importantly, it also allows you to identify “at risk” clients who must gain medical clearance prior to starting an exercise program.
- Exercise Programming – be trained in the secrets of optimal program writing for a range of different client who have different exercise goals and abilities.
- Resistance Training – become skilled in the correct technique of 50 Weight Training exercises and how to most effectively impart this knowledge to others.
- Legal Issues – ensure you know what to do and what not to do in order to stay away from any legal problems as a fitness instructor.
- Industry Skills – learn important techniques on how to get your first job in the fitness industry, what networks you need to be a part of, and the importance of fitness instructor registration.
- First Aid – a level 2 First Aid course is included in the price of your Certificate III in Fitness course. Learn the techniques required to deal with common gym injuries as well as techniques that could literally be life saving.
Venues
As these courses are “hands on” they involve both classroom and practical activities. Classroom sessions are scheduled at the CAE Centre, 253 Flinders Lane Melbourne, and the practical sessions at Richmond Recreation Centre, Gleadell Street, Richmond (where you will have exclusive use of the gymnasium for your personal instruction).

Graduation
When you graduate you'll receive your nationally recognised qualification, issued under the Australian Qualifications Framework. You'll also receive a statement detailing the units of competencies you have attained during the Certificate III in Fitness (SRF30206), with a specialisation in Gym Instruction.
As the CAE is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), your qualifications and statements of attainment are automatically recognised by other RTOs, and can earn you credit for training courses throughout Australia.
