We Really Are What We Eat!
Did you know that the average Australian gets 35% of their daily energy intake from junk food? Is it any wonder that we have some many Australian's overweight or obese?
It is poor dietary habits like this that the National Health and Medical Research Centre is hoping to influence with its draft revisions to the Australian Dietary Guidelines released in December 2011. The new guidelines represent a review of 55,000 scientific papers on food and health that have emerged since the last revision of the healthy eating guidelines in 2002. The focus of these new guidelines is on food rather than nutrients which should make it easier for the general public to understand.
The 5 new health eating guidelines are:
1. Eat a wide variety of nutritious foods from the following five food groups every day:
• Vegetables
• Fruit
• Wholegrains
• Lean meat, Poultry, Fish/Nuts & seeds
• Milk/Yoghurt & Cheese
2. Limit intake of foods containing saturated and trans fat, added salt and sugars and alcohol.
3. For a health weight, you should be physically active and choose nutritious foods and drinks to meet your energy needs.
4. Encourage and support breastfeeding.
5. Prepare and store food safely.
Key recommendations include:
• Most Australian needs to DOUBLE their intake of vegetables to include 5-6 daily per day.
• Foods high in saturated fats should be replaced with those containing polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats such as nuts, avocados, and olive oils.
• 2 serves of fruit is required daily.
• 6 serves of wholegrain cereal foods per day should be eaten including breads, cereals, rice, and pasta.
• 2.5 serves of reduced fat diary a day is what most adults need.
For most fitness professionals the information provided in the new healthy eating guidelines are largely common sense. However, it is important to know that these do exist and that you may play an important role in making sense of these to clients who are not as educated as you, and are often confused by the large amount of conflicting opinions on healthy eating. |

Melissa Holden, Owner Mel Holden Personal Training |
Business Success Story
Melissa Holden started working in the fitness industry in 2008 after a career in sales. She loved the company she worked for, however "I just got really bored of working on the road on my own and I knew there had to be something else out there I could be more passionate about. I had always worked out in gyms and had a particular interest in kickboxing. After some consideration I realised that a role in the fitness industry would be a perfect fit for me!"
After gaining her certification Mel found employment at the Bayfit Gym in Altona. "Initially I was doing several roles including membership sales, reception, and gym floor duties. Mel made a deliberate decision not to pursue Personal Training clients initially because she wanted to gain some experience working in the club and being trained by other trainers before starting her own business.

Tools of the Trade |
Aaron's Exercise Tool Box - Unique Circuit Your Clients Will Love
Why these exercises made it to Aaron's Tool Box
This edition of Aaron's Exercise toolbox is a circuit based workout using some excellent "tools of the trade" put together by one of the great educators in the fitness industry Ian O'Dwyer. In this short video Ian uses some of the fantastic, but seldom used, pieces of equipment available to fitness trainers including the VIPR, Power Plate, Freeform Boards, Sand Belts, Heart Rate Monitor, and a Weighted Vest.
The reason that I endorse this approach to exercise is that the tools used give you a point of difference when compared to what most trainers use in training sessions. This can really be used to your advantage in a business sense because, as all the great marketers say, "it is better to be different than it is to be better". Put another way - clients may be attracted to you because you don't do the same exercise as all the other trainers. From a technical perspective, all of these movements are very functional or "intelligent" in that they challenge the body in 3 dimensions thus developing stabilising muscles, balance and overall coordination. I will be including some of these exercises into my own training program and recommend you do as well. Watch the circuit by clicking here
If you would like to learn more about how to use these tools and more then check out the incredible "Tools of the Trade" Workshop |

What is a "how's it going?" phone call and how can this help my fitness business?
The "how's it going" phone call is a simple but highly effective business building tool. All you do is pick between 3-5 people every day from your database who you don't need to call for any specific reason, but you call them anyway and ask them "how's it going?"
Initially some people will be surprised as to why you are calling but you will be amazed how often the person you are speaking to turns the conversation towards business. Common responses for personal trainers include, "I was going to ring you soon to get started again", "I was just talking to someone the other day who should work with you, can I give you their details", "can you tell me again about that new supplement you are selling".
The other thing the "how's it going" call does is to eliminate the common complaint that customers often have, i.e. "I only ever hear from you when you want something". The "how's it going call" is a must add to your weekly list of marketing activities. Implement it today and watch your bank account balance grow! |
