Certificate III in Fitness (SRF30206)

To become a qualified Gymnasium Instructor you will need to complete the Certificate III in Fitness (SRF30206).

The pathway for attaining Certificate III in Fitness requires the completion of 3 separate parts.

Part 1

Part 1 comprises the following unit of competency:

  • SRF FIT 005B - Apply basic exercise science to exercise instruction
  • SRF FIT 014A - Provide advice to clients on the application of basic anatomy and physiology to fitness programs
  • SRF FIT 015A - Provide nutrition advice to clients in accordance with recommended guidelines

This 40-hour program is designed to enhance your basic understanding of health, fitness and wellbeing. Subjects covered include:

  • Anatomy
  • Physiology
  • Movement mechanics
  • Nutrition
  • Principles of fitness

Upon completion of Part 1 you will have gained a basic knowledge of the structure and function of the human body.

Assessment

Part 1 is assessed by a written theory exam, a practical assessment and an assessment workbook.

Course prerequisites

There are no specific educational prerequisites. It is assumed that you will have some familiarity with your chosen area of interest, i.e. you currently work out in a gymnasium. A commitment to the course is essential and extra study will be necessary to meet the demands of the course.

Course requirements

Participation in all sessions is recommended to prepare you to sit the exam. Attendance: 80% course attendance is highly recommended to prepare you for the written and practical exam.

Exams: Part 1 is assessed by a written theory exam.

Part 2 (Gym Instructor)

Pre-requisite: Part 1 or significant fitness background.

This 65-hour component of the Certificate III Part 2 - Gym Instructor program prepares students to be competent in the practical skills of weight training, exercise programming and design, health and fitness appraisal and effective communication.

Part 2 comprises the following units of competency:

SRX GCSO 04A - Meet client needs and expectations
SRX GCST 03A - Process client complaints
SRX INU 002A - Apply sport and recreation law
SRX OHS 001B - Follow defined occupational health and safety policies and procedures
SRX RIK 001A - Undertake risk analysis of activities
SRF FIT 001B - Provide orientation to clients prior to undertaking a fitness program
SRF FIT 003B - Undertake client induction and screening
SRF FIT 004B - Develop basic fitness programs
SRF FIT 006B - Use and maintain core fitness industry equipment
SRF GYM 001B - Instruct fitness activity skills to a client using fitness equipment
SRF SPP 002A - Develop and apply an awareness of specific populations to exercise delivery
SRX GRO 003A - Provide leadership to groups
SRF GYM 002B - Customise gym instructional skills to include specific areas of expertise current in the fitness industry
SRC CRO 007B - Operate in accordance with accepted institutional practices, styles, and legal and ethical responsibilities
SRX GRO 001A - Facilitate a group
SRX EMR 001A - Respond to emergency situations

Practical Fieldwork

Students will be expected to gain fieldwork at an appropriate health & fitness facility and will be required to document a number of tasks in a workbook which will be supplied.

Course requirements

Attendance: 80% course attendance is highly recommended to prepare you for the written and practical exam.

Exams: Part 2 is assessed by a written theory exam and assessment of practical skills and fieldwork workbook.

Part 3 (Gym Instructor)

This 12-hour component of the Certificate III program prepares students to be competent in the practical skills of first aid.

Part 3 comprises the following units of competency:

SRX FAD 001A - Provide first aid
SRX FAD 002A - Provide advanced first aid response

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), Recognition of Current Competencies (RCC), and Up Front Assessment (UFA) processes recognise your existing learning from work experience, life experience (eg. community work, hobbies) and other courses (eg. formal or informal training). They do this by matching your skills and knowledge against the course you are doing, or intend to do. This means that if what you have learnt elsewhere is relevant to the course you are undertaking, you may not have to do some parts or all of the course.

Recognition of Prior Qualifications

Successful applicants who have completed, and been awarded a qualification for, any part of their course from another Registered Training Organisation, are eligile to receive a credit for previously completed components which exempts them from attendance and assessment.
